Middle School Life Science: Vital Signs Activity Bundle including Jeopardy Game

Welcome your students to class with our warm-ups:

1. Day 1 vocabulary reader page to introduce vital sign vocabulary.
2. Day 2 crossword puzzle worksheet to check their vocabulary recall.

Recommend printing the reading page on colored paper and laminating for repeat use.

Then start the unit with a student driven technology integrated Scavenger Hunt activity using Google and the internet. (Day 1 and 2) Student are provided a 29 question worksheet to research important aspects of vital signs. Student explore heart rate (pulse), circulatory system, respiration, body temperature, and blood pressure. If you have access to BrainPOP, their videos are great a compliment to the learning process on these topics.

Jeopardy Game (Day 3) “Categories” are: Happy Hearts (Heart Rate & Circulatory System), Hot Bodies (Body Temperature), Pressures of the Heart (Blood Pressure), Take a Deep Breath (Respiration), and Staying Alive (Random Vital Sign related questions).

Vocabulary words covered in this activity include: heart rate, pulse, tachycardia, bradycardia, arteries, veins, capillary bed, circulatory system, CPR, respiration, inhalation, exhalation, peak flow, units of measure, blood pressure, pre-fixes: hypo and hyper, root words: thermic and tension, fever, shiver, sweating, alveoli, pulse points and their location.

After the scavenger hunt is completed, challenge your students to test their knowledge with our PowerPoint based READY TO PLAY Jeopardy Game. From the Jeopardy Board with 25 questions across 5 topics, students work in teams to compete for points. Final Jeopardy question and answer included as well. We have also provided a simple guide to how to play in TEAMS rather than only 3 or 4 students at a time.
